HanstyleHANSTYLE refers to a variety of cultural contents derived from the six major characters of Korea: Hangeul, Hansik, Hanbok, Hanok, Hanji and Hanguk-eumak.

Information valid from December 2010

Hangeul

HangeulThis unique Korean writing system consists of 14 consonants and 10 vowels combined to make a total of 11,172 syllables. The Korean alphabet is easy and simple to use and was registered as a UNESCO Memory of the world in 1997. More and more people in Chia and Southeast Asia are learning hangeul today then ever.

There are also many hangeul lessons geared towards foreigners at major unversities in Seoul.

Futher information can be found National Institute of the Korean Language.

Hansik

HansikThanks to its four distinct seasons, its sea-surrounded location and well-developed agriculture, Korea has developed a unique cuisine based on vegetables and low-fat foods including various fermented dishes.

A traditional Korean meal consists of a bowl of rice and various side dishes such as guk (soup), jjigae (thick stew), jeongol (stew), namul (seasoned vegetable or wild-greens), jorim (simmered food), gui (grilled dishes), ssam (vegetable leaf wraps), and kimchi (salted cabbage or raddish), which provide a balanced diet.

In particular, kimchi is a lactic acid-fermented food chosen as one of the worlds's five healthiest foods in 2008 by health, an American magazine.

There are also other well-known Korean dishes: bibimbap (streamed rice mixed with seasoned vegetables and meat), galbi (marinated grilled short ribs), and bulgogi (barbecued beef).

Hanbok

ess HANBOKTraditional Korean clothing was developed over 5,000 years ago and it elegantly combines curves and colors. Hanbok is comfortable to wear because it does not hug the body, but rather sets it free.

Nowadays, various designers have modernized the traditional hanbok so that they are more casual and contemporary. Due to teh popularity of historical dramas like Jewel in the Palace, the beauty of hanbok is being recognized worldwide.

Hanok

HanokThe traditional Korean house, Hanok, is environment-friendly in various aspects, especially in terms of its natural building materials like wood, earth, stones, straws, roof tiles and paper.

The building arrangement and the low fence walls provide an open and eco-friendly space. Unforunately, only a few of them remain today.

However, various overnight lodging problems are provided at the bukchon, Namsanok, and Jeonju hanok villages.

Hanji

HanjiTraditional Korean paper, hanji, is made from mulberry bark and is extremely durable, lating for more than a thousand years. It is no surprise that evidence of the world's oldest movable metal type print, jikjisimcheyojeol, was printed on hanji back in 1377 and still survives today. Thanks to the durability of hanji.

Korea was able to register seven of its cultural assets including the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty as a UNESCO Memory of the world.

Nowadays, hanji has become a preferred material for craftwork due to its unique texture.
