I arrived in South Korea in December 2011. It was my first English teaching job and I was very excited. This excitement did not last long. I was working in Gumi City at a place called Avalon. The manager was a woman called Sally who is one of the most unpleasant people I have ever met in my life. She lied, stole, intimidated, and even searched my apartment while I was at work. Under no circumstances work at this place. You will never be able to finish your contract to collect the bonus, you will not be paid whatever is in your contract, your medical is not paid, you will work overtime and not be paid. It was not just me. It was all the foreign staff and the local teachers as well.
I'll say it again- DO NOT consider working at Avalon Academy in Gumi City. Our agent was a gentleman named Michael Kim (his company is called Englishwork)who also lied and was no help at all in dealing with any of the problems. My advice is to talk to one of the teachers at the school you're interested in working at before you get on a plane. South Korea is a fantastic country and I hope you have a wonderful time there.
