I would like to share with you my experience of working at Brooklyn English school located in the beautiful city of Oviedo, Spain.
I worked for Brooklyn from January 2013-February 2013 starting with 2 other teachers from Engliand and Ireland. We have all since left. The owner of this school is unfit to be an ESL professional let alone a business owner.
From day one we were lied to about our working hours, we were promised in excess of 16hrs a week and ended up getting around 10. The owner 'Sara' belitted our teaching ability saying that 'we were not English teachers' and we cannot use our own initiative in classes due to this.
I have been an ESL teacher for 4 years 2 at a reputable University in Asia. You pay is always late and not in full. She has verbally confronted parents of students, unhappy with the schools payment scheme in full view of eveing class students and with disgusting language use towards them. What is more alarming is the admission by herself that she has 'emotional problems' and psychosis. I have experienced this first hand.
When I took the job she said that we could use all of the resources at the school and even use classrooms for private classes. When I placed an advert for private classes and she saw it, she fired me claimng that I was 'taking food out of her mouth', and biting the hand that feeds her. I clamly pointed out that she had said this was ok when I was offered the job.
This sent her into a frenzied and violent verbal attack, swinging her arms around, with some pretty deplorable threats made against me and the other teachers, she said she can do anything she wanted as we were in the pobation period. She even said that she didnt have to pay me and she would get away with it also.
2 Days later she phoned me to meet and she re-hired me, I accepted as i had nothing else at the time, but was very wary of her. I did find another job out of teaching and told her the following day I would be leaving, this was greeted with 'thats ok, you have to think of yourself' which I was very surprised about. The day I came to leave she promised she would transfer me my pay which stands at 350 Euros.
I left on the 24th February, she still has not paid me. (Which now I am persuing through 'proceso monitorio') The other teachers told me after I left that she was going crazy telling them that she was not going to pay me. I have contacted her since and she has just ignored my e-mails.
There are many other incidents that occured here, the other 2 of my colleagues left in March making sure they were paid before doing so, after hearing her saying she wouldn't pay me I guess this rang some alarm bells.
The city is beautiful and the spanish people are really nice but, AVOID this place like the plague! Attached is a link to another review by my former collegue.
