China to return 51 detained English teachers to South Africa was created by ESLwatch
After a nightmare that lasted for months, the group of South African teachers exploited by a fake visa scam in China will come back to Mzansi next week.
More than 50 young professionals were trapped in the Far East with no passports or income after the man who set them up with their jobs – Owen Wong – was arrested in the city of Changchung.
The educators were then confined to their university dormitories, forbidden to leave the premises as they were part of a Chinese criminal investigation.
SA teachers allowed to leave China
On Friday, spokesperson for the parents of the stranded teachers Charl Venter, told us that immigration officials and local authorities have agreed that the collective will travel back on three separate flights on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday:
“We’ve had written confirmation sent to us by DIRCO that the children will be flying home at the start of next week. Immigration officers and local authorities also relayed the good news to us.”
Venter also revealed that the Chinese government themselves will be footing the bill for the flights home. He was bowled over by the kind gesture and hailed everyone involved in ensuring the safe return of the teachers.
He was particularly complimentary of the university in Changchong – almost 1 000km north of Beijing – for accommodating the group and giving them both a place to stay and food to eat from their canteen.
Why have they been released now?
When we put the question to Venter, he revealed that the teachers are being released as the investigation into Owen Wong is concluded, and the decision to prosecute him is now on the table:
“Quite simply, the investigation into Owen Wong has been concluded. All of the teachers co-operated with the investigation and had their versions of events verified. The reason they couldn’t leave China was that they were part of a criminal investigation.”
The relieved father also told us there were “no hard feelings” towards China, its people or police force. The group are only holding Wong accountable. Despite the actions of this fraudster, this story is all set for a happy ending.
