Hagwon from hell!
Institute Review
I would like to submit another review for SLP Ulsan Namgu. As you can see this is not the first review on the blacklist, and there are a fair few very good reasons for that!!
I find it very difficult to explain in words how bad this school actually is. Every aspect of the job at SLP Namgu Ulsan was shockingly bad.
This hagwon has an extremely toxic work environment. The amount of work that is expected from teachers is way too much. The foreign teachers teach all day with very little or even no free periods. On top of the hectic work load, the foreign teachers are expected to do reports for kindergarten and elementary every month for every student they teach. There is no time to do them in working hours, so we had to them after work or at home (unpaid).
The director made it very clear that we couldn't address any issues we had with workload. The director emphasised that THEY are the principal and THEY are in charge, we have no right to discuss these matters. Pretty much cut communication completely with the foreign teacher and used the Korean teachers as messengers.
I had a really hard time at this hagwon, so I handed in my resignation letter. Of course the director turned very sour with me, and demanded I paid almost 3 million won for the LOR and acted like I had no right to leave the school. It even stated in my contract that I would receive the LOR with 60 days’ notice, but this didn’t seem to matter. The director accused me of things I hadn’t done on a daily basis, making the situation unbearable, plummeting my mental health to rock bottom.
This school has gone through its fair share of foreign teachers due to the terrible working conditions. But now the director has stopped giving letter of releases as I assume they are finding it hard to hire new teachers. I unfortunately had to leave Korea as I was given very little choice…
Many other shady things happened in my time there, but I would have to write a book to address all the issues with this school. Please avoid at all costs!
The pros
My housing was good, I had a big apartment.
The cons
Pretty much everything mentioned in my review.

Institute Review
Very disorganized, chaotic, and poorly managed. Hardly an English institution, rather more of a day-care center or kids cafe that is English themed. Bullying and infighting is rampant and seemingly encouraged among students, faculty, and staff. A stressful environment where schedules and plans are changed, altered, moved last minute and with little to no communication.
The pros
The location is really nice, the housing is decent, and the school does provide compet*t*ve pay and decent health benefits, even covering vaccinations for the whole faculty and staff.
The cons
Just about every other aspect of working here. The health and safety aspect should be taken with a grain of salt because the academy refused to close for quarantine during a large wave of infections. The school 5 minutes away on foot closed due to an outbreak and many of the students and their siblings went to other academies and facilities that had outbreaks, too. Students beat each other up and the teachers always infight, bully, and argue with one another. There is little direction or communication on anything but like many English kindergartens, the expectations of outcomes and results are far too high. Teachers are reprimanded for trying to control or manage students and we were even told not to correct the students English because the students didn't like that. The students and their parents are in the higher wealth bracket in Ulsan and so there are constant complaints from parents and many students with behavioural issues that are never reprimanded. I would not suggest working here, the money and health coverage are not worth it.
