Gangnam English Academy was the best school I've taught at
2 years ago.
Institute Review
I really enjoyed my time working at GEA. It's nice to work at a big school with lots of teachers, I could always count on them for support or ideas for my class. The ladies at the front desk were also really helpful. Management was very good and supportive. The kids were generally really good, and I could count on the managers to help me deal with the difficult ones.
The pros
Great location, very central and also next to a nice park.
Very nice, friendly teachers, staff, management
Good curriculum with books, but enough freedom to plan my own theme activities and special classes.
Great communication - weekly meetings, annual event calendar, clearly posted schedules, emails and kakao messages all in English
Foreign owners - it's nice to be able to actually talk directly to the decision-makers and be heard
Big classrooms - I like to move the kids around a lot, and that was encouraged by management
Nice co-teachers - mine was really helpful. I think there were some people who had complaints but overall I thought they were good and really cared about the kids. Maybe more training would be helpful, as mentioned below in the Cons.
High salary
You get to choose your own apartment, instead of getting stuck with whatever the school has available.
The cons
No formal training or continuing education, just feedback from occasional observations and parent calls.
Expensive housing to live close by.
Covering classes for sick teachers
Advice to Management
Do more formal training, hire an extra teacher to cover for sick teachers. But mostly, don't lose what makes the school special as you grow. Kids are really happy there, and the workers are as well. I would hate to see that go away if it becomes more 'corporate.'
