Institute Review
I do not recommend working here especially as a first teaching job in Korea.
This school has 2 locations in separate buildings that are next to each other. One school is quite clean. The other school is a complete messy disaster. The clean school has air conditioning in every room. The other school doesn't have air conditioning. The clean school has less students and their English level is conversational. The other school is overcrowded and the students have trouble with behavior and/or have a very low level of English.
The manager uses the nicer school as a way to keep teachers that want to quit. If you stay, they might move you to the nicer school.
Some hagwons designate a trainer to help new teachers. Not this school. After watching a few classes, you're on your own. There is little to no support with anything inside or outside of work.
Because of this 'everyone for themselves' atmosphere, the employees mostly stick to themselves. If you're looking for a hagwon with coworkers that you can be friends with, this isn't the place. Everyone is miserable so the school is a swarm of negativity.
The teaching materials are all over the place. American textbooks are sometimes used but the material is too difficult for the students. The other textbooks are filled with grammatical mistakes and sometimes nonsensical information.
The pay is average for hagwons but compared to the amount of work and physical effort it takes to work there, the pay is way too little.
The employee retention rate is quite low. Many teachers don't last a full year. I haven't heard specific information on the manager giving letters of release but I wouldn't count on it.
Anyone looking to be an actual teacher needs to stay far away. This is a place for babysitting.
Anyone looking for an organized school needs to stay far away. This place is a figurative and literal mess.
The pros
Provided housing is in a villa neighborhood across the stream from the school.
There are elevators in the school building.
There are many other native speaking foreign teachers to potentially mingle with.
The schools are easily accessible by the Jeongja train station or by bus.
There are many amenities right outside of the school. (restaurants, grocery stores, doctors, pharmacies, convenience stores, glasses/contacts stores, gyms, cafes, etc.)
Some classes have as little as 3 students which makes classroom management easier.
Each campus has wifi.
Each teacher gets their own work laptop. (don't get too excited. see the laptop con.)
Payment is almost always on time.
The cons
Work commute is a 10 minute walk. It's great on nice days and cruddy on rainy/snowy/freezing days.
Housing is in villas which have no security, no elevators, and sometimes no individual mailboxes.
The elevators are useless when any of the other hagwons in the building are bringing kids up or down. Then the elevator line is very long and the elevators are packed.
There are 2 campuses in separate buildings. You might have to work at both campuses in a single day. It's cruddy if the weather is bad and/or if the elevators take forever.
The offices are cramped with desks and people. If even just one person is loud or is eating something with a strong scent, it's very disturbing.
Some classes have as little as 3 students which makes lesson planning difficult. If the students complete their work quickly, there is a lot of extra time that needs to be filled.
Some classes have way too many disrespectful students that speak hardly any English which makes classroom management extremely difficult.
Each teacher gets a very old and sometimes broken laptop to use. Most laptops don't work unless they are plugged in to the charger. Once unplugged, the laptop will turn off.
There is no trainer. You get your confusing schedule and that's about it.
There is no head teacher. Questions must be asked to anyone who is willing to listen and even then, answers are difficult to come by.
Advice to Management
Clean and organize your schools.
Designate a head teacher/trainer for the foreign teachers.
Update broken electronics.
Request feedback from teachers on materials and work atmosphere.

RISE Wirye is not a good place to work at.

1. Management do not care about their teachers or the education of its students. They only care about getting money from the parents.

2. Teachers are overworked and regularly complain of being burnt-out. You are required to teach all day everyday from 9:30am until 6:30pm, and in some cases until 7:30pm.

3. There is no training. You do not become a better teacher by working here.

4. There is no appreciation of staff. The director gives t*k*n gifts for holidays such as Christmas and Lunar New Year but she will never personally come to you to show appreciation or to ask how you are doing. In most cases she will not even introduce herself to you when you arrive, even though her office is a mere 10-20 meters from your classroom.

5. There is a huge turnover. More than half of the foreign teachers employed to work here do not finish their contracts.

6. There is no team atmosphere in this company. Foreign teachers, Korean teachers and management are completely separate ent*t*es.

7. They promote people to leadership positions based on loyalty, not skills. The most recent head teacher is the biggest example of this. She has very little experience, and a big ego. She does not praise teachers for their work, she does not ask for ideas for school events and she speaks to people in a condescending way. During her preparation time she only talks about men and shopping in the teachers room. Most teachers either put in their headphones to listen to music, or leave the room to avoid listening to her. She is extremely unprofessional and will contribute to making your experience a worse one.
